I wanted a simple no frills calendar & my love of Google Docs & Spreadsheets lead to this crazy implementation. Please understand I said no frills because just like opening a crowed closet and having a whole bunch of things fall on you I expect the comments to point out its limited functionality.
I am using a Google form to input entries. The form is meant to be as simple as possible. There is a place for you to enter an event and notes. The rest of the form simply takes in date info in the form of month/date and hour/minute. The minutes are in 15 minute intervals for am and pm. The hours start from about 8am and down to 11pm but are listed as numbers with a dash to distinguish am from pm (this allows for sorting chronologically). What I love about Google Docs & Spreadsheets is that anything you do here also works on the iPhone. The form I created works on the desktop and also on the iPhone for mobile entry.
Why do all this? Well the main reason is I wanted a quick way to enter a calendar item and a filtered view for yesterday, today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow. The spreadsheet view allows this kind of view in a very simple no frills way. Anything entered can be automatically sorted. I can enter an event a month from now and forget about it. When that time comes up I will be able to see it for at least 2 days in advance and it will be in chronological order on my iPhone. The spreadsheet shows information relative to the current day.
Bonus: Another bonus is that this can also serve as an activity logger. If I complete something on a certain day I can have a listing displaying that underneath all the timed events. The default values for Hour and Minutes are Do and Ne -. When an item is completed it will be listed as Done - “the item name”.
